Universal Basic Income –
the power to say ‘no’, for everyone

Approximately 2 mins.

On December 2nd, 2019, the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery was celebrated. To mark that date, Beyond Trafficking and Slavery, an editorial partnership between openDemocracy and researchers from Africa, Asia, America, Australia and Europe, have commissioned this video, focused on Universal Basic Income (UBI). According to this group, UBI might be an appropriate policy response to contemporary labour unfreedom.

TED Talk - Rutger Bregman

Approximately 15 mins.

Poverty isn't a lack of character, it's a lack of cash.

Bregman: "The idea that there's something wrong with the poor themselves is not restricted to [Margaret] Thatcher. Some of you believe that the poor should be held responsible for their own mistakes, and others may argue that we should help them to make better decisions. But the underlying assumption is the same, there's something with them..."

Kurzgesagt - In a Nutshell:
The Rise of the Machines - Why Automation is Different This Time

Approximately 12 mins.

A brilliant video showing how far spread automation will be in our economy and the difficulty replacing jobs lost by this process. For those interested in Basic Income as a response to technological change, this is a video worth watching.

TEDx Christchurch - Raf Manji

Approximately 16 mins.

A Universal Income needs a focus on citizen responsibility.

Lots of people are talking about Universal Basic Income: the idea that every citizen deserves a minimum income by right. But this focus on rights neglects one of the most important characteristics of being a citizen: our duties to the state. In this wide-ranging and historically eye-opening talk, Raf Manji explores why we definitely need a Universal Basic Income -- and why we can't stop there. - TEDx Talks

TEDx Maastricht - Rutger Bregman

Approximately 17 mins.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, today I'd like to share a big idea with you. In fact, I believe it could be one of the bigest ideas of the 21st Century. It's an idea that could unite politicians from the left to the right, in fixing our broken social security system. It's an idea that could give dignity to millions and accomplish what we should have accomplished long ago, especially in our rich and wealthy countries, erraticating poverty. But first....." (please watch the video for more of Rutger's fantastic speech).

10 Good Reasons: Video
Approximately 4 mins.

This video was produced in the USA, but it is applicable to New Zealand and New Zealanders. One in seven Americans lives in poverty, that is they can't afford the basic needs like food and shelter, yet, like New Zealand, they have an abundance of resources. They throw away 40% of the food that they produce and there are 6 vacant homes for each homeless person. The issue is that people just don't have access to money. Because of automation and globalisation, there just aren't enough jobs for everybody to earn a living. The video gives 10 good reasons for having a universal basic income. This video is entertaining so sit back and enjoy!

Perce Harpham - Thoughts on Inequality & Universal Basic Income: Video

Approximately 7 minutes.

"All this comes about because inequality has been increasing to such an extent that a number of the world's leaders are saying something must be done about it...."

Watch this video to see how a UBI could be used as part of an overhaul of both the tax and benefit systems in New Zealand. Perce talks about having a UBI, adjusting the income tax to a flat tax rate and introducing an asset tax.

From the Big Kahuna Website
Approximately 5 minutes.

This video considers scraping the current welfare and tax system and replacing it with an unconditional basic income (UBI), a comprehensive capital income tax and a flat tax. The aim is to create a system which has huge benefits for our economy and all New Zealanders. He discusses the benefits such as a better economy, everyone paying their share, recognising unpaid work, treating everone the same and having a simpler system. This video was made in Wellington.
Why a Flat Tax + UBI is Better than our Current System:Video

Approximately 5 minutes, from www.garethsworld.com.

The guy says it would be fairer, simpler and there would be better incentives to work. He says, half the top 200 tax payers in NZ don't pay the top rate of income tax. That is not fair! But it is perfectly legal!! They just rearrange their affairs to minimise their tax bill. The proposed system would be fairer because it would be taking care of the poor. Simpler, because there is currently four different tax rates, many different benefits and a lot of bureaucracy. Also, he considers that with a flat tax rate there would be better incentives to go out and do more work!
